Hey!  Long time no see!  I decided that as long as I've been writing these stories, I'd come back and do some revisions on some older ones because let's face writing from back then kinda sucks now and makes me cringe. ><  I decided it would make more sense to log in here and edit this file than to repost the whole story since these are already in the NaruNozoShippers club.  So yeah.  Have a nice, freshly revised oneshot!~ =3

"Valentine's Day." Nozomi smirked and rolled her eyes. "What a stupid, pointless day.  I mean, it's only around so couples can rub it in to people like me that we're single." The cat girl sighed softly, a melancholy look on her face. "Hard to believe it used to be my favorite holiday." The girl sighed again, her legs dangling from the top of the building she was sitting on.

"What is it with you and rooftops, anyways?" came a nearby voice.  “Also, did you know that you talk to yourself a lot?”

Surprised, Nozomi glanced up, her gaze landing on none other than Naruto Uzumaki, her fellow teammate.  The brunette’s ears sprung upward, eyes widening slightly in surprise. How long had he been sitting beside her and why hadn’t she sensed him before now?!

"Naruto! L-listen, this isn't a good time...I mean, I would really like it if you could...err.." There was a pause as she struggled to think of something, anything that would make him leave.  When she couldn’t think of something to say, nerves got the best of her and she changed the subject, "What are you doing up here anyways?!"

Naruto snickered, amused.  She always got so jumpy when he was around! "I was looking for you," he began, "and I figured this was a good place to look since you seem to love rooftops." He glanced at her curiously. "Why do you always come up here?"

"Oh, no real reason." Nozomi said, staring down at her toes. "I guess it’s related to housing a cat demon...or it could be that I find it peaceful up here." she smiled slightly, looking at the sky; a brilliant mixture of reds and oranges silently promised that night time would be upon them shortly.  She should probably get home before it got dark. "I come up here to think about things, and I like that I can be alone since nobody ever cares to follow me."

"At least," Her smile faded as she turned her attention back to the blond haired boy, "I thought I was alone up many times have you followed me?"

A sheepish grin spread across Naruto's face as he rubbed the back of his head.  “Oh, just a few times really.”

Nozomi raised a disbelieving eyebrow at the boy and folded her arms across her chest.  “Really?  Why don’t I believe that…?”

“Well, because…” Naruto laughed sheepishly.  “I’ve kinda been following you ever since I realized you came up here.”

"Stalker!"  The brunette groaned, face palming.  “I don’t get it, Naruto.  I’m not a nice person...heck, I don’t even like to socialize.  Why the heck do you find me so interesting?!”

Naruto hesitated for a moment before answering.  “Well...I’ve met people like you before.  They closed themselves off because of some deep rooted problem in here.”  The boy pointed to his heart before shrugging, giving a small smile.  “I’m interested in you because I want to help.   What’s your problem?”

‘Oh, if you only knew.’  The cat girl rolled her eyes upward, laughing dryly.  “Trust me, kid.  You’ve never known anybody like me before.  No matter what you think.”

“Hey, I’ve told you before that my name’s Naruto!”  The spiky haired boy protested, irritated.  “Besides, you and I are the same age so stop it with this ‘kid’ business!”

The brunette shrugged her shoulders nonchalantly, muttering.  “Whatever.”  Shaking her head, she returned her gaze to the sky.

Naruto watched her face, shifting uncomfortably.  He’d never liked the silence.  It just felt so...lonely.  Especially when there was somebody to talk to.  The spiky haired boy shifted once more, clearing his throat, attracting the brunette’s attention once more.

“Oh, you’re still here?” She mumbled, disappointment flicking in her eyes.

Ignoring her rudeness, the genin spoke, grateful to end the stifling silence between them.  “So, uh...what happened, anyways?”

"Hm?" Nozomi’s brows knit together in confusion.  He didn’t really think she was just going to spill her life story to him right this moment, did he?  She scooted away from him, looking down at the roof evasively. "I'm not sure I understand your question."

Never knowing when to quit, the blond followed her move for move, leaning close enough that she’d hear him whisper even if she didn’t have those big cat ears.  "I mean, why don’t you like Valentine's Day?"

So he wasn’t asking for her life story then?  Nozomi relaxed a little bit, exhaling softly.  Still, she hated to dredge up the past and that was exactly what he was doing.  "...I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that you overheard that."  Not in the mood for a stroll down memory lane, the brunette gave another shrug, folding her arms tightly over her chest.  "Sorry, but it's none of your business."

"Aww! C'mon, Nozo-chan! Please?" Naruto begged.

Nozomi raised an eyebrow at him. "Why do you want to know, anyways?"

"I'm curious." The boy gave a cheeky grin.  “Besides, teammates shouldn’t keep secrets from each other, right?  Do it for the good of Team 7!”

All he got was a long, blank stare before the brunette shrugged her shoulders yet again.  "Sorry." She gave him an “I’m-not-telling-no-matter-what-you-say” look before shifting her gaze.

Still refusing to give up, the blond gave a pouty face, puckering out his lower lip.  "Aww, please?   If you tell me your reason, I'll tell you mine." he said cutely.

“Pfft.”  Nozomi rolled her eyes again, wondering just how much longer she’d have to put up with this guy.  Couldn’t he see she wanted to be alone?  She was about to tell him off when she realized what he’d said and she looked at him in surprise. "You don't like Valentine's Day? How come?"

"I'll only tell you the reason if you tell me yours first." Naruto repeated, a self-satisfied smile creeping onto his face.

"Ohhh! Fine!" The brunette sighed and sagged her shoulders in defeat.  It was true what they said.  Curiosity really DID kill the cat.  In this case, anyways.

Naruto just grinned and watched her, waiting for her to begin.

Nozomi took a deep breath and lowered her head, shadows casting over her eyes. "...When I was three, my Mom caught pneumonia and just...couldn’t get better.  I always blamed myself since she got sick chasing me outdoors in the rain.”  Her voice cracked and the cat girl shifted, avoiding his stare as she fought off the tears welling up in her eyes.  When she felt okay again, the brunette continued.  “I think my father knew that I blamed myself.  After Mom died, he did everything he could to make me feel special.”

A soft smile found its way onto her face and she closed her eyes, reliving the memories of days she’d cherished.  “On Valentine's Day he would go above and beyond, treating me like a princess.  He took me out to eat, surprised me with chocolate candies and constantly told me he loved me.  Even when the whole clan watched us with disdain.  He made me feel like it was okay to be me and for that I worshiped the ground he stood on.  I’d have done anything for my Otou-san."  The smile on her face widened for a moment before it began to fade and she glanced down at her hands on her lap.   "Of course, life just couldn’t let me be happy for once.  Things had to get ruined somehow."

By now the tears she’d managed to keep at bay were streaming down her face freely, and the brunette had to turn her head to the side.  Disgusted with herself, she swiped a hand across her face, drying the tears. Crying in front of somebody else (even if that somebody was a fellow teammate) went against her number one rule, and that was to only cry in private.  Tears were a sign of weakness and she’d forced herself to grow strong, rarely showing those feelings to others.

Unfortunately for her, Naruto actually cared.  She wasn’t used to that.  Back where she came from, nobody cared enough to noticed if she showed any sort of emotion.  She simply didn’t matter enough.  That, however was not the case at this moment.

Naruto tilted his head when he noticed that she’d stopped talking for some time.  That wasn’t the end of the story, was it?  He supposed it explained some things but it didn’t really tell him why she hated this day so much.  Frowning, he touched her shoulder lightly.  “Nozo-chan?”

To his surprise the girl simply shrank away from him, inching away ever so slightly.  Had her shoulders just heaved or was he imagining things?  Watching her closely, Naruto was certain he hadn’t imagined it.  “Nozo-chan, what’s the matter?”  He matched her movement, closing the space she’d tried to put between them again.

“Nothing.  I’m fine.” The cat girl’s voice was muffled, leading Naruto to believe otherwise, but he remained silent even though he was dying to know what happened next.  Forcing himself to be patient, the boy shifted in his seat, watching his friend.

Finally, after a few of the longest minutes Naruto had ever had to sit through, the brunette heaved a sigh, turning to face him again.  “Sorry, it’s just a hard story to tell, and I…” She trailed off before clearing her throat, shaking her head.  “Anyways, things were great for a few more years.  Then, a few days after my seventh birthday, our clan was attacked and raided by enemy shinobi.  I don’t know everything that happened because I was forced to hide during the battle, but when I came out, my father...was dead.”  She shook her head again, wrapping her arms around her middle for comfort.  “Things were never the same again after that.  Nobody cared what happened to me and the other kids began to beat me up on a regular basis.   It got to the point that I dreaded even getting out of bed, I hated my life so much.  I hated Valentine’s Day the most, because the memories I’d once shared with my father hurt worse than anything my clan could do.”

Finally she’d gotten to the point of her story and though there was plenty more to tell after, Nozomi went silent.  He’d only asked why she hated this day; nothing more and nothing less.  He should be fine with her explanation.  The silence from beside her confirmed that she’d told him enough, and possibly even too much, if the look in his eyes was anything to go off of.

"Nozo-chan, I'm sorry.”  He looked away awkwardly, grasping for the right words to say.  He hadn’t expected such a heavy story to be the reasoning.  Really, what could he even say in response to that?  His own reasoning paled in comparison to hers.  “What happened to your dad really didn’t deserve it.”  He paused before adding, “About your mom though, I’m sure he didn’t blame you for her death.”

The only response he got from the girl was a nod and a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.  Naruto sighed, realizing she hadn’t believed him, but wasn’t sure what else he could say to convince the girl so he just stayed quiet, watching her.  The conflict on her face was apparent, and he found himself wondering just what she could be thinking about.  Before he could ask, she broke the silence.

“Anyways,” Nozomi sighed softly as she stood up, turning her back to the blond.  “Now you know why I hate Valentine’s Day.”

“Yeah…”  Naruto got to his feet as well, looking up at the sunset.   For awhile, neither of them spoke, both the teens mesmerized by the various colors in the sky.

“Well, your dad’s not here anymore, but that doesn’t mean someone else can’t do it, right?”

Nozomi blinked, snapped out of her trance by Naruto’s words and she glanced back at the boy in confusion.  “I don’t understand.  What are you trying to say…?”

“I’m saying someone else could still make you feel special even if your dad is gone, right?”

“Um….right, I guess…” The brunette raised an eyebrow, not exactly sure what to make of this discussion.  The only thing she knew for certain was that he was beginning to freak her out.  Especially the way he was looking at her.  What was with him?

“Then I’ll just have to do it!”

Naruto’s triumphant declaration left Nozomi feeling more than a little bit stunned, and she stepped away from him nervously.  "Wait! What?"   A drop of sweat rolled down her head as she eyed him with something akin to fear.

"I said I’ll take over for your dad!" Naruto stepped close enough to give her a hug, causing the brunette to go rigid.

“What do you think you’re doing?” She hissed at him, eyes narrowing in suspicion.

“Oh c’mon, you know what I’m doing!” Naruto crowed, grinning widely before dropping his voice so only she could hear him.  "Nozo-hime."

Her fear was confirmed by this and the brunette resisted the urge to face palm.  “No, Naruto!  You don’t get it at all!  You can’t do what Otou-san did for me-- don’t make this your business!"

Naruto just grinned at her. "What do you mean?  It would be just as easy for me to take you to eat and buy you candies and tell you I love you!  So why shouldn’t I?”

Nozomi’s face had gotten hotter and hotter as she listened in horror to his reasoning and she fought the impulse to throw her hands up and scream in frustration.  Did he seriously not understand?!   “Why?!  I-I’ll tell you why-- because those things come across waaay different from you than it would from my father, that’s why!”

“How does it come across any different from me?” Naruto tilted his head to the side, looking at her curiously.

Once again, the urge hit to facepalm and this time Nozomi let it happen, groaning inwardly.  This kid really was hopeless.  Sighing heavily, the brunette forced herself to look Naruto in the eye.  “Look, Naruto.  The kind of special a father makes a girl feel and the kind of special a boy makes her feel are two completely different things.  For example...”

She paused, trying to think of how to word her explanation.  The last thing she wanted was to have to really elaborate.  “When a father takes his daughter to eat and surprises her, it’s because he loves her.  He wants to take care of her.  But...when someone like YOU does all’s like you’re telling the girl ‘Hey, I want to be your boyfriend!’”

The minute the words left her mouth, Nozomi regretted it.  Just from the look on Naruto’s face she was sure he hadn’t understood her at all.

“So?  What’s the problem?” Naruto stepped into her personal space, a smirk tugging at the corners of his lips.  “Even if that IS the message that comes across...well, how do you know I’m not trying to tell you something like that?”

The cat girl immediately stepped back, grimacing as she realized she couldn’t go any further without stepping clear off the building.  “Excuse me?” She frowned, hating the heat that was creeping into her face.

Naruto’s smirk only grew as he realized he basically had her cornered and he took a step back, merely to give her a moment to calm down.  “What I’m saying is this: I like you, Nozo-chan!  We have a lot in common, so maybe we would be a good match!”

“...You’ve got to be kidding me.”   Nozomi retorted, folding her arms across her chest.  “There’s no way I’m going out with you.”

“Aww!   Don’t say no without at least giving it a chance!”

Before the brunette could say anything else, he moved in and pulled her close, pressing his lips gently on hers.   He grunted softly, wincing when he felt the girl’s claws dig into his arm, his eyes widening when he realized she was kissing him back.

At the same time, Nozomi seemed to notice her own actions as she released his arm and broke the kiss, pushing him hard enough that he fell backward.  Despite hitting his head in the process, the blond sat up immediately, grinning like an idiot as he stared up at her.

His eyes on her made the cat girl even more self conscious and she shot him the nastiest glare she could muster.  "Wh-what kind of cheap trick was that?!" She sputtered, her face bright red.

Naruto’s grin didn’t even falter as he stood back up, chuckling softly.  “It wasn’t a trick at all- that kiss was special to me.” He insisted, giving her a tender look.  “You're special to me, Nozo-hime.  I care about you."

'What's wrong with me?! Why is my heart pounding so hard?!'  Remembering that she was already on the edge of the roof, Nozomi ducked her head and shut her eyes. Since when did she get tongue tied?!  She couldn’t even think of an insult in this moment!  ‘C’mon, think!  There has to be something I can say to diffuse this situation!’

Suddenly a light bulb went off in her mind and she grinned in triumph.  She had it!  Raising her head to face him again, the brunette gave what she hoped was an indifferent scowl to the boy.  "So anyways, what’s your reason? For not liking Valentine's Day, I mean."

“Huh?” Naruto blinked, confusion flickering in his eyes before he remember and a laugh erupted from him.  “Oh yeah!” He smiled.  “Well, the reason I don’t like Valentine’s day is because nobody ever wants to be my Valentine!”

A vein popped on Nozomi’s forehead as she glared at him.  "That’s it?"  He’d made her relive all that pain just so she could find out he had no luck with women?!  How the heck was that even fair?!  She was just preparing an angry retort when the blonde winked at her, nodding.

“Yeah!  Though...that doesn’t seem like it’ll be a problem anymore after that little moment we just shared, eh, Nozo-hime?”

Nozomi's face went scarlet red as she stared at him, mortified.  What could she say?  Not even SHE knew what she’d been thinking to have returned the boy’s embrace!   All she could do was glare at him, frustrated.  She knew that without an explanation for her actions there was no way she could discourage him enough not to pursue her.  “...Shut up.” She muttered loudly, glancing off to the side.

“Hahahahaha!  You’re so funny!” Naruto lunged forward, catching the girl by surprise as he wrapped his arms around her in another hug.

“I’m not TRYING to be funny!” Nozomi protested, gritting her teeth.  “No, really-- leave me alone!" she growled, trying to free her arms, which he’d pinned to her sides in his sudden hug.  “Naruto I’m not interested so just let me go already!”

The blond loosened his grip, frowning up at her.  “If that’s true, then why’d you kiss me?”

There was the question she’d been hoping to avoid, staring her right in the face.  Unable to give a sufficient answer, Nozomi gathered all her strength and shoved against the blond, knocking him over backward- and unfortunately, causing him to take her down with him.

“Oh wow, Nozomi.”

Dazed, the cat girl lifted her head and screeched loudly as she realized where she was.  Hastily, the brunette climbed off Naruto’s lap and scrambled to her feet, brushing herself off and turning to leave.  “That was an accident and you know it so just drop it!”

“Yeah, sure.” Realizing her intention to leave, the spiky haired boy jumped to his feet as well.  “Hey wait, where are you going?”

“Home, where else?” The brunette turned and gave him a pointed look.  “Or have you not realized that it’s getting dark?”

“...Oh.”  Naruto glanced up as the girl pointed toward the sky, which was taking on a dark blue hue.  Tiny white stars were beginning to peek out of its mass.  “I guess it IS time to go home then.”

“See ya at the next training session then, yeah?”

“W-wait!” Naruto reached out, grasping for her hand, only to grab onto her tail instead, and the brunette turned on him, glowering at him.

“Hey!  Paws off the merchandise, Ramen-breath!”  She jerked the furry appendage out of his grip, nearly knocking him onto his knees.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to--” Naruto sputtered awkwardly, breaking off as her name for him registered.  “...Ramen-breath?”  Now it was he who raised an eyebrow at her, a small smirk beginning to form on his face.  “So, is that what it tasted like?”

His question startled the brunette and she took one step backward, her stare darting down to her shoes as she blushed.  Why had she called him that?  “I-I...uh…” She stammered, grasping for anything she could say.

The blond stared at her for a long moment before surprising her again by breaking out in laughter.  “Ohhh!  It’s a nickname, right?” He hugged his sides for support as he grinned up at the brunette.  “Well...if I’m have fish breath...uh....I’ll just have to call you Kitty-cat!”

A loud clap was heard as Nozomi facepalmed for the second time that evening, groaning.  Great.  Now he’d given her a nickname?  Things just got better all the time, didn’t they?!  The longer she stood there, listening to the boy, the more mentally exhausted she felt.  “Well.  I’m going home now, for real.” She announced, rubbing her temple tiredly.  “Good night.”

“Aww, okay…” Naruto deflated, watching the girl leave.   He really hated the night time.  It made him feel so alone going home to an empty apartment.  Maybe he could delay it just a little bit longer.  “Uh, wait up, Nozo-chan!”  He called out, running to catch up to the brunette, who had already managed to get back onto the ground.

She looked up at him impatiently, folding her arms.  “What is it?”

Naruto jumped from one ledge to another until he was safely on the ground, and hunched over, hands on his knees while he caught his breath.  After a few minutes, he looked up at the annoyed cat girl hopefully.  “I was wondering if I could walk you home!”  He gave his most irresistable smile.

“I would tell you no, but something tells me that you’d just follow me anyway.” Her ears flattened against her head and she sighed heavily in annoyance.  “Fine, but on one condition.”

“Awright!” Naruto pumped a fist in the air, grinning widely and Nozomi briefly wondered if a simple whack to the head would be too much violence for the situation.

“Naruto.  You didn’t even listen to the condition yet!”

“Oh.” the boy stopped his cheering, looking back at the brunette intently.

“You can walk me home, but you have to promise to stop following me all the time- it’s beyond creepy!”

“Aww..” Naruto pouted, his reverie over.  “But what if I want to talk to you?”

“Then approach me like a normal person would.  Don’t track me like I’m some kind of animal.”

Naruto opened his mouth to say that he’d tried that, that she’d brushed him off, but he stopped himself.  They could always deal with that later.  For now, he wanted to walk her home and this was the only way she’d let him.  Giving a slow nod of his head, the blond smiled softly.  “Okay.  I promise not to follow you around.”

“I’ll hold you to that promise.”  Nozomi turned on her heel and began to walk at a fast pace. “Alright then.  C’mon, let’s go.” She muttered.

Naruto hurried to keep up, beaming at the girl.   As he’d expected, the walk was mostly a quiet one, the brunette’s eyes focused straight ahead.

Realizing he’d have to be the one to break the silence, the blond cleared his throat.  “So, um...oh!  Nozo-chan, you never answered my question earlier!”

“Really?  What question was that, Naruto?” The cat girl muttered in response, never once turning to look at him as she walked briskly onward.

The boy grinned sneakily.  “You know...about Valentine’s day?” He replied, “It looks like I have a sweetheart for the holiday!”

Nozomi stopped dead in her tracks, eyes going wide.  “...What are you talking about?” she asked cautiously.  Something about his words made her nervous and she hoped she was wrong.

“Well, since you kissed me it’s obvious you like me.” Naruto beamed at the brunette, his face coloring slightly.  “So, what do you say, Nozo-chan?  Will you be mine?”

The brunette felt her face heat up once again and she backed away from him, eyes widening even more as she stared at him, unable to speak.  “I--you--what?!”

Her response made him smile, realizing she must be really flustered to suddenly be so incoherent, and Naruto laughed.  “I’m asking you to be my Valentine, Nozo-chan!”

Hearing it for herself made her even more uncomfortable and the cat girl shook her head, glancing around wildly.  They were in her neighborhood...If she planned things right, she could get inside without ever having to answer.

A quick glance to the left confirmed that she was close enough, and the brunette flashed a toothy grin before darting in that direction, running as fast as she could.

Bewildered by her lack of a response, Naruto tore off after her, frowning.  “Nozo-chan, come back!”

“No!” The word slipped from her lips as she raced up the steps, her apartment, her sanctuary straight ahead.   Naruto was getting dangerously close, despite the fact that she was running hard enough to break a sweat, and she pressed on, ignoring the boy’s shouts of protest as she finally reached her door and fumbled with her key.

“Naruto--no-!”  The door clicked open and she backed into the apartment just as the blond reached the porch, panting hard.  He reached out to her, his hand grazing the fabric of her dress, and she blushed at the contact before shoving his hand away.

“No!!”  The door slammed in his face, the lock clicking into place, and Naruto was left to stand there, staring incredulously as he tried to figure out what had just happened.  She’d seemed okay earlier, even after that kiss.  That..amazing kiss...His cheeks grew rosy just thinking about it.  She had gotten flustered over it but she’d still allowed him to walk her home.  So why the sudden shut out?  Was it because he’d asked her to be his Valentine?  Blue eyes widened with realization and Naruto looked at the door with renewed interest.  Could it be that Nozomi was...shy?  That would certainly explain the reason she’d run from him!

His confidence returned to him almost immediately as he grinned widely, stepping back towards the stairs.  “Okay, I’ll let you go this time,” he called out, his voice laced with determination, “but don’t think this means I’m giving up!  I won’t give up until you change your mind!”  His grin widened if possible.  “That’s a promise, and I never go back on my word!”  Even though he was sure she couldn’t see him, he gave a small wave.  “Well, see ya around, Kitty-cat!”

Nozomi listened until his footsteps grew farther away and she sighed, sliding down against the door onto the floor.  This was not good.  Why had she gone and kissed Naruto?  It was the single stupidest move she could have made and now she knew he’d never leave her alone.

Even worse than that, though, were the butterflies she felt fluttering in her stomach.  No.  It wasn’t possible.    She’d promised herself long ago that she wouldn’t have anything to do with another guy so long as she lived.  Which, ironically, she thought, wouldn’t be long at all.   Still though, a part of her longed to possibly let Naruto in and see just what they might have if they explored their possibilities as a couple.  He could be annoying at times, but he had a lot of redeeming qualities to make up for that.  Not to mention his unwavering loyalty.  She was sure that if she became his girlfriend, he’d never pull the crap that fool, Suoh had.

‘What?!  No!!’

A frustrated sigh left her lips and the brunette banged her head against the door loudly, moaning.  She could no longer deny it- she had feelings for her teammate. Feelings that she could never let him find out about.

Drip drip. Pit pat. Splish splash.

Nozomi shivered as a cold gust of wind kicked up, giving her goosebumps all over her legs, as well as her shoulders. 'Baka!' she scolded herself silently. 'You should have at least grabbed a jacket!'

True, a netted top and knee length dress with sandals was anything but appropriate attire for this weather.

The cat girl sighed. "Then again, I didn't exactly get a chance to grab anything before I left." A drop of sweat rolled down the back of her head as she thought back to what had happened only moments before.

Nozomi had been lounging lazily in a chair with a blanket, listening to the rain fall. She hated it when it rained, absolutely hated it! Having a demon cat in her made her feel drained on days like this. Nozomi's eyes had just slid shut when suddenly the door slammed open, revealing none other than the silver haired Jounin, Kakashi.

Nozomi jumped, surprised by the sudden intrusion, and shrieked. Kakashi winced, putting a hand to his ear. "Nozomi, calm down. It's just me." he said, his slightly monotone voice hard and firm as he fought to be heard over the cat girl's shrieking.

Nozomi stopped and frowned at him. "Kakashi-sensei? What are you doing here?" she asked, raising an eyebrow in suspicion.

"I'm here to give you your next mission." Kakashi replied.

Nozomi's eyes bulged in disbelief. "Whaaaaat?!" she yelled. "Oh no, I'm afraid it'll have to wait, sensei. I am NOT about to go out traveling on a day like this!" she yelled, pointing one clawed finger at the window, where rain was pouring so hard it was impossible to see a thing.

"Who said anything about traveling?" Kakashi shook his head. "Your mission is simple- find Naruto and bring him back."

Nozomi sweatdropped. "What do you mean, bring him back? He's not at home?" When all she got for an answer was a nod, the brunette sighed. "Why can't Sakura go? You know how much I hate the rain!"

"Sakura is down with a cold." Kakashi said matter-of-factly, "So that just leaves you."

Nozomi groaned. "Why can't you go?"

"Because, I'm the sensei," Kakashi said, "and I'm telling you to! Now go, before Naruto catches a cold, too!"

"Whatever." Nozomi growled, climbing off the chair, and snatched the umbrella the silver haired Jonin held out to her. "I'll bet it's 'cause you want to read that dumb book!"

"I can assure you it's not, not that that is any of your business." Kakashi said calmly. "Now get going!"

"Yeah, yeah, all right already! I'm going!" Nozomi snapped as she stepped outside, stopping to open her umbrella, and walked off.

Kakashi watched her from the doorway for a few moments before shutting the door and sitting in Nozomi's chair. He pulled out a small, orange book with a red restricted mark on it, flipping rapidly through the pages. "Now then...where were we?"

Nozomi groaned and squinted her eyes, struggling to see through the vicious downpour. What was Kakashi THINKING, sending her, a CHILD out in such weather?!

The cat girl shivered, stopping when she reached the academy and looking at the building. It was here where all Hidden Leaf ninja started. They were taught, trained and tested to determine whether or not they had what it took to be a ninja. A wistful sigh left her lips as she stared at the building, wondering what it was like inside. She'd been barred from the academy where she'd come from, so she'd never even been inside an academy. If not for her father and his willingness to teach her, Nozomi would've never learned the way of the ninja.

Still, she wondered what it was like to be in a classroom, surrounded by friends and rivals alike. Sighing again, she wondered as she often did, why she couldn't have been born a normal girl; she'd been denied such simple things, and it was just because she'd been born a Kubota demon. It was so unfair. Just then, a sneeze sounded from nearby, abruptly snapping her out of her thoughts and she jumped. "Ah-choo!"

"Naruto?" Nozomi glanced around, though it seemed futile as hard as the rain made it to see. Somehow she was able to make out the blond haired boy on the steps of the academy. Most likely because with a navy blue and bright orange jacket, he was hard to miss. Even in the rain.

"Oy...Naruto that baka...he doesn't even have an umbrella?" The cat girl muttered in frustration.

As carefully as she could, Nozomi walked up the steps and sat down beside the wet ninja, cursing Kakashi for giving her such a small umbrella. She couldn't even shield her team mate from the rain without sitting practically hip to hip with him. "Naruto?" she spoke softly, holding the umbrella so it covered them both.

Naruto glanced up in confusion when the rain stopped hitting him, noticing the umbrella, and glanced at the girl holding it. "Nozomi?"

Said cat girl nodded. "Hello, Naruto." She braced herself for the loud, enthusiastic greeting he always gave. To her surprise, the spiky haired boy just nodded his head and said, "Hey."

Another drop of sweat rolled down Nozomi's head. What should she say now? A long, heavy silence fell over the two, and the only sound heard was the loud pitter patter of the rain.

"It's crazy."

"Neh?" Nozomi's head shot up and she stared at Naruto. His face was sober, his eyes clouded, and he wore a sad smile.

"It feels like it was all just yesterday," Naruto began (whether he was talking to himself or to her, Nozomi wasn't sure), "when I was just starting out here as a student. Sakura, Sasuke and me."

Nozomi was about to correct his grammar, but he spoke again, not giving her the chance.

"Sasuke...Man, he really ticked me off with attitude of his." He chuckled softly, revisiting memories only he could see. "He was always doing things better than me without trying. That made me so mad, I always challenged him whenever I got a chance, just trying to be better than him at something. I didn't care what but I wanted to be the best for once, you know?"

Nozomi nodded, inhaling deeply as she recalled what little she knew about the ex-team member. He was the original third team mate in Kakashi Hatake's squad, but he'd betrayed them and gone with Orochimaru. Shortly after that, Nozomi had shown up, or rather, collapsed outside of the Leaf Village. It hadn't been long before she was discovered by Naruto, and eventually she'd been talked into staying and living her life as a Leaf Shinobi. Afterward, the Hokage had assigned Nozomi to team Kakashi to fill the gap caused by Sasuke's absence. Nozomi sighed again, shivering as another cold gust of wind went by.

"Are you cold?" Naruto said suddenly.

Shocked, the cat girl nodded her head sheepishly, sweatdropping. She hadn't even thought he was paying her attention. "A little." she admitted reluctantly, "But that's beside the point. Not important."

"Well...if you say so." Naruto smiled at her half heartedly before staring off into space once more, resuming his walk down memory lane.

Nozomi bit her lip, gnawing at the chapped skin anxiously. It was so hard for her to see him like this. Okay sure, the kid annoyed the heck out of her most of the time, but still...It made her heart hurt to see him so depressed. Especially when she knew there wasn't a thing she could do to fix the situation.

'Darn you, Sasuke, this is all your fault!' she cursed him in her mind, 'Your leaving caused a wound that nobody can heal! I may not know you but I hate you!'

The brunette sighed, lowering her head and glanced at Naruto from the corner of her eye. Just the sight of him, his form bent, head hung to hide the sadness on his face, it hurt her more than she could understand. 'It's because he's always so darn happy.' she realized. 'He's always had that big, toothy grin on his sweet face while laugh- wait...SWEET?! I did NOT just think that!' The gold eyed girl sweatdropped, smacking herself mentally. 'Whatever. I have to at least try to figure out a way to make him go home. Otherwise Kakashi-sensei will be upset with me and as weird as he is, I don't want to know what he does to punish students!'

Her brows knit together as she thought hard about what she could do to cheer the boy up. When it finally came to her, the thought hit her like a brick and she sweatdropped, biting her lip again. Ok, it wasn't anything big or special, but...Hopefully Naruto would appreciate it, knowing how difficult these things were for her. Shifting the umbrella to her other hand, the cat girl swallowed hard, her heartbeat speeding up. 'Calm down, it's not that big of a deal, right...?' Gathering all her courage, she gently put her arm around the blond's shoulders.

This act caused Naruto to look up, surprised and he turned his wide eyed gaze toward the girl. "Nozo-chan? What is it?" he asked. Her actions confused him greatly. Nozomi was anything but friendly towards him; on a good day he got a "Hey" and a nod. Maybe a smile if he got lucky. It was way out of character for her to even touch him, let alone put her arm around him. Probably out of her comfort zone too. So...why was she doing this? A few minutes went by before the answer hit him and he smiled warmly as realization set in. It couldn't be...was she...really trying to comfort him?

A light tint of pink found its way onto Nozomi's face as she smiled back timidly. She knew he must be thinking that she was weird right now. Especially since she usually kept her distance from him...It was extremely unlike her to do anything of this sort whatsoever.

"Nozomi?" Naruto tilted his head, his eyes burning into hers as he silently pleaded with her to answer him.

The blush on her face was darkening, but she resisted the urge to jerk away, instead giving Naruto's shoulders a squeeze and leaning into him slightly. Her actions surprised the spiky haired boy more than he could describe. Here was the girl who acted like she despised him, for no reason; the girl who jumped away if he got too close to her..and now that same girl was hugging him?!

"Naruto..." Nozomi hesitated, unsure what to say. What COULD she say to help at this point? Maybe she should just try to be encouraging. Yeah, she could do that. She just needed to pick her words carefully. "I know the things I say can't heal you..or even help I don't know WHY I'm saying this, but..I do believe you'll get Sasuke back one of these days...but you have to keep trying harder and harder...No matter what happens! If you want him back you can never give up." She sweatdropped, mentally slapping herself. Ok, that had sounded less motivating and more bossy than it had in her head. So much for choosing the right words.

Awkwardly, the brunette removed her arm from the boy's shoulders, scooting away from him. "Of course," she said, looking at her feet, "You don't have to listen to me...d-do what you want."

Naruto stared at her, still surprised. He had just opened his mouth to answer when she spoke yet again, cutting him off.

"...Listen. I know I can't fill the void Sasuke made. Not on this squad or in your heart." She paused, "Even so, I'll do my best to help team 7 succeed...and I'll try to help you get Sasuke back, so that some day he can reclaim his spot on the team. In the meantime, if you're lonely or angry or can tell me. I'll listen." She sighed, keeping her eyes trained on the ground. "I know you'll definitely get him back, even if it's tough...I know you'll do it because I believe in you."

Nozomi broke off her sentence in disbelief. Once again, that had sounded way different in her head than the way it came out. Instead of being an encouraging friend, she'd sounded like she was trying to cheer up her boyfriend (she didn't even HAVE a boyfriend!)! The cat girl frowned as the blood rushed to her face once more. Had seeing him this way seriously made her feel so sympathetic that she couldn't be comforting without sounding like some love crazed ditz?!

"I-I'm sorry. Th-that was a dumb thing for me to say." she handed Naruto the umbrella. "Here, take this. You need it more than I do- I'm going home." She cringed as rain soaked her exposed shoulder, shuddering a little. "Anyways...don't stay out here too much longer or you'll catch a cold." she said. 'Then Kakashi-sensei will be really mad!' she added silently.

She was just about to stand up when Naruto put his hand over hers, stopping her and she looked at him in confusion. "Naruto?" She quickly came to regret looking at him as she saw the expression on his face.

Despite his sadness, the boy's eyes were shining brighter than before, and he wore a small smile. "Thanks, Nozomi. You did help a little." He nodded, somehow smiling a little bigger.

Nozomi tried not to focus on the butterflies that were suddenly in her stomach as she found herself locking eyes with him awkwardly. "I did? But how? I didn't anything." She mumbled, looking off to the side.

Naruto's smile grew slightly. "Well, that's true. But you tried to encourage me, so that's gotta count for something right?" He laughed a little when she stuck her tongue out at him and sighed softly. "Really though, it was nice of you to say what you did. I'll remember those words if I feel down again."

The brunette frowned, narrowing her eyes slightly at her team mate's words. "Well then, what exactly did I do that helped?" She tilted her head curiously, the confusion in her heart making it easier to ignore the fact that he'd scooted closer as he spoke.

Naruto's lips tugged upward as he broke into his trademark grin, teeth exposed and all, and Nozomi couldn't help but flinch at his sudden change of attitude. "Well...It helped, having a cute girl put her arm around me! I felt very loved, y'know!"

That was the last thing that Nozomi had expected to come out of the blond's mouth and her face turned a light shade of red. "Ah-!" The cat girl turned so her body faced away from him, folding her arms quickly. "W-well, you were getting rained on, and-and Kakashi-sensei said to go find you, so I-I really didn't have a choice in the matter!" she stammered.

Naruto nodded his head, a smirk on his face. "Uh huh...sure. Whatever you say. I think there's more to it than that!"

Forgetting he'd see her blush, Nozomi glanced back over her shoulder, raising an eyebrow. "Really, now?" She muttered, narrowing her eyes. "Go on then. Enlighten me, even though you're more than likely going to be wrong."

"Nah, I don't think so." Naruto smirked, noticing the dramatic change of coloring in the cat girl's cheeks and snickered. "I think you were acting all worried and stuff cause you like me."

Nozomi's eyes grew as large as saucers as she gawked at the blond, her jaw dropping open. She should've expected this. Shortly after they'd become tentative friends Naruto had begun to give not so subtle hints that they should get together, constantly driving her to run away as his persistence never seemed to run out. She'd been caught off guard this time because she'd been so concerned about him. Well, she saw no reason to be worried anymore - if he was starting this crap with her he must be feeling better!

She shot him a glare, speaking with as much anger as she could muster. "You are absolutely one hundred percent completely wrong! I don't like you in the least- I hate your guts!" Quickly looking away once more, she huffed, sticking her nose in the air. "The only reason I came was because Sakura-san has a cold and Kakashi-sensei didn't want to tear his nose from his stupid book! End of story."

Her words seemed to fall on deaf ears as Naruto's smirk widened. "If you hate me why are you blushing so hard? I think you're lying!" He laughed, noting the way the brunette's shoulders tensed suddenly. He knew it had nothing to do with the way the rain was pelting her and everything to do with how badly she'd been busted. Nozomi had been a terrible liar for as long as he'd known her (which wasn't really that long, honestly, but he liked to think he was a pretty good judge of character). Snickering softly, he leaned against the girl's shoulder so the umbrella shielded them both. "You're in luck," he whispered into one of her fuzzy cat ears, making it twitch, "Sakura's not that means I'm available!"

A shrill squeak escaped the brunette and her fur spiked up as his words fully sunk in, the only thing keeping her from jumping up being the way he was leaning on her. She turned her head to glare at him and blushed even darker when she realized that his positioning had made their noses almost touch. "Well you can just go ahead and STAY available, 'cause I'm not interested either!" She spat, gritting her teeth.

Naruto raised an eyebrow, biting back a laugh. Her reactions never ceased to amuse him. She was so easily pissed off by the smallest little things, it seemed. Even a tap on the shoulder agitated her. "Well, sure do blush a LOT for someone who's not interested." He smirked as realization flashed in her eyes and he knew she'd realized he had her trapped.

Unable to turn away any more than she already had, Nozomi closed her eyes and exhaled heavily, a vein on her forehead popping up with anger. There was...nothing she could really say as an excuse for that. As much as she hated to admit it, he had her this time. Oh, but she wouldn't ADMIT such a thing. The brunette clamped her mouth shut, hoping that enough silence on her part would end the discussion that had taken such an awkward turn.

To her dismay, her refusal to answer had the exact opposite effect as Naruto lifted his head off her shoulder, letting out a big, hearty laugh. After a few minutes, he sat back a little, wiping a tear from the corner of his eye. "You're so silly, Nozo-chan! Why do you choose to fight me when you really care deep down?" He gave another soft laugh as the brunette turned to look at him, scowling angrily. "Oh man, I needed that. I feel so much better now, thanks!"

He beamed warmly at the cat girl and she squirmed uncomfortably, edging away from him until she was no longer beneath the umbrella. 'Why? Because he managed to get me so embarrassed?' she wondered silently. "D-don't mention it." she managed to say after a slight hesitation.

A long silence ensued as Nozomi thought about what course of action to take. She could run away like she usually did, but...would that only prove Naruto's belief of her fighting feelings for him (Feelings she did NOT have!)? Then again, she really didn't know how much longer she could bear to sit here and have him laughing at her. Before she could make up her mind, a shiver ran up her spine and she sneezed loudly.

"Bless you." Naruto mumbled, though she could hear the amusement still plain in his voice.

Before she could respond, another sneeze erupted from her, followed by another, and another. The brunette hunched over, wiping her nose with the back of her hand, grimacing at the snotty mess.

The smile faded off of Naruto's face as he looked at her, concern in his eyes. "Are you okay? You sound like you're getting a cold." He got up, kneeling in front of her and putting a hand on her forehead. She DID feel warm. A soft sigh escaped him and he tsk-tsked, shaking his head. "I guess that's what you get for not wearing a jacket." he said. "You should know better."

Nozomi leaned back, not liking how close he'd suddenly gotten to her. She rolled her eyes at his words and face palmed. "You think I'm stupid or something? I would have grabbed a jacket but Kakashi-sensei practically shoved me out the door! Ah-CHOO!" She winced as the sneeze threw her backward and she knocked her head against the wooden academy steps. Great, it was beginning to look like she was coming down with a cold!

"Nozo-chan, are you okay?" Naruto stood up and grabbed one of the cat girl's hands, gently helping her to her feet. The hit to her head had stunned her a little, and she had to lean against the blond for support as she gazed at him disorientedly. "Wh-where are we going?" she asked, looking confused.

Naruto smiled. "To get ramen, of course!"

Nozomi blinked, slowly coming out of her daze and raised an eyebrow, pulling away from him. "What are you talking about? Why are we getting ramen at a time like this? Shouldn't we get out of the storm before we get any sicker?"

Naruto's grin widened as he nodded his head enthusiastically. "Of course we should, but not before we get ramen! There's no better cure in the world for a cold than nice, hot Ichiraku ramen! You'll be better in no time!"

"Oh..." Nozomi frowned, glancing down at the ground awkwardly. "Um...I don't have my wallet on me."

"That's ok, I'll pay for you!" Naruto pulled out his wallet, holding it up with pride. "I've been on lots of missions so I've got plenty!"

Maybe it was the hit to the head, or maybe the oncoming cold was messing with her. Whatever the reason, Naruto's words touched Nozomi, breaking through her cold exterior, and she smiled softly. "...You don't have to do that, you know."

"Hey, I want to." Naruto replied. "You helped me out, now I'm gonna help you out!"

Nozomi could only stare at him, a small smile forming on her face. 'Maybe I misjudged him...maybe this is just how he comes off to all his friends...maybe he's just extra awkward around girls..' She snapped back from her thoughts as a chuckle reached her ears and she frowned, glancing at Naruto. "What? What's so funny?!" she demanded.

Naruto grinned mischievously, sticking his tongue out playfully. "Nothing's wrong! I was just thinking what a great first date this will be!"

Date?! Nozomi knew it. Sheknewitsheknewitsheknew she had to be blushing again. "It's not a date!" she protested, blushing furiously. Why did he always have to go and say something stupid when they had a nice moment? An even better question, perhaps, was why DID he always manage to get her so flustered?! She stuck her tongue out at him before turning her back to him and taking a step away.

Naruto just smirked, watching her shoulders tense up as the rain began to hit her once again. "You should probably move closer if you want this umbrella to keep you dry!"

Nozomi groaned, gritting her teeth to keep them from chattering as the rain hit her, and she sneezed again, a sharp pain shooting through her chest. "I'm already beside you! What else can I do?!"

"Well, I could carry you," Naruto suggested, grinning slyly. He laughed when the brunette turned to glower at him, blushing darkly again.

"You're NOT serious!" She screeched, resisting the urge to sock him.

The blond threw his free hand up semi-defensively in front of himself. "I'm just saying, it would keep you under the umbrella! If you don't want that, I could put my arm around you."

"Why on earth would I agree to something like that?" Nozomi rolled her eyes, folding her arms tightly with a huff.

"Well, because you like me for one thing-"

"I do NOT!"

"-and if I DON'T hold onto you, there's a chance you could accidentally walk out from under this tiny umbrella!"

Nozomi growled, moving further away. "You're exaggerating! I'll be fine!" No sooner had these words left her mouth then a cold drop of rain splashed against her back, and she jumped. "Kyaaa!"

Naruto's face broke into a big, toothy smile as he watched her retreat somewhat back under the umbrella. Fighting back the urge to say "I told ya so", he extended an arm out to the cat girl. "You comin'?" he asked innocently.

Nozomi growled and cursed under her breath, sneezing again and again. Darn. That stupid cold was really beginning to get on her nerves.

"Nozomi?" Naruto pressed.

Another rain drop hit Nozomi, this time soaking into her ear and she shrieked, jumping. "Arrggh! FINE!" she grumbled, and Naruto grinned, wrapping an arm around her shoulders loosely, closing the space between them. He nearly doubled over with laughter as he saw how badly this simple motion affected her. "Well then, let's go before you get so sick you can't walk and I DO have to carry you!"

A drop of sweat ran down the back of Nozomi's head and she gulped, nodding and letting him lead. God, this was so embarrassing! 'It's all Kakashi-sensei's fault!' she thought angrily. She bristled as Naruto's soft snickering reached her ears. He was entertained by her embarrassment! She wanted to sink into the earth and never return, it was so embarrassing!

'Freaking old man Kakashi-baka!' Her mind screamed as she walked on, face flaming with embarrassment, 'Why'd you have to give me such a tiny umbrella?!'

It was a bright, sunny day. Not a cloud was in the sky as a gentle breeze blew by every now and then. Birds were singing, and bees were buzzing to and from flowers, gathering pollen. Yes, it was a perfectly wonderful day, and everybody was happy.

Everybody, that is,except for the blond haired boy who sat beneath a tree on the outskirts of Konoha. One look at his bright orange and navy blue jacket, and his insanely spiky hair, you knew right away this kid was none other than Naruto Uzumaki, the boy who had the nine tailed fox spirit sealed inside of him. The same kid who also claimed he would one day be Hokage.

Said ninja let out a deep sigh as he glanced at the pale blue sky above. "Man, this is boring." he grumbled, "I should be training, not laying around like this!" He jumped to his feet. "Pervy Sage, where are you anyways?!" he shouted, shaking his fist at the sky. "Aren't you supposed to be helping me with my training?!" The blond haired boy let his shoulders sag slightly as nobody answered. Ok, so he hadn't actually expected an answer, but still...

Naruto pumped a clenched fist into the air, a glint of determination in his eyes. "Ok, Pervy Sage! I know you're out there somewhere, and I'm gonna find you no matter what it takes!" A drop of sweat trickled down the back of his head as a thought hit him. "Knowing him, he's probably doing 'research' for his dumb book! Hah..why'd I have to get stuck with HIM of all people?"

The blond shook his head as an undesirable mental image appeared in his mind, and he started to search for his teacher; the one who went by the Toad Sage, but had been dubbed the "Pervy Sage" by his younger student. As he ran on, Naruto glanced around him for any sign of the white haired Sannin. He found nothing of the sort, but this didn't discourage the young ninja. He just kept on looking.

"C'mon, Pervy Sage! Where are you?!" Naruto growled under his breath, frowning as he came to the village gates. "You'd better be in the village!" He was about to take another step forward when he heard a loud thud.

"Eh?" Surprised, Naruto glanced around the area, searching for the source of the sound. Soon he got his answer as his gaze zeroed in on the form of a fallen girl. "Hey, girl, are you all right?!" he inquired loudly, hurrying over to her. He knelt down, examining her closely and sighed with relief when he saw she was still breathing. Now that he got a better look, he realized she must be about his age. He continued to observe her, his jaw going slack.

She was clothed in a black and green zip up dress, held on snuggly by a deep purple belt. On each side of her dress was a small slit, as well as a zip shut pocket. Her shoes were dark blue sandals, held on by a strap and a single gold buckle. Her medium brown hair fell just a little past her shoulders and her pale skin glistened in the sunlight, giving her a ghostly white complexion.

However, all this wasn't the cause for the look of amazement on Naruto's face. Oh, no. What he was staring at in awe was the fuzzy black cat ears and tail that were attached to the girl.

Naruto chuckled to himself as he put his hands on his head, wiggling his fingers together in an attempt to imitate the twitching of the girl's cat ears.

Almost as if sensing what he was doing, the girl's eyes fluttered open enough for her to see what was going on. "Who are you, and what do you want?" she asked in a small, timid sounding voice.

"Eh?" Naruto stopped what he was doing and glanced sheepishly at the girl. "Oh, you're awake!" he bellowed loudly, an enthusiastic grin plastered on his face. The girl winced, her ears flattening against her head.

"Oh, hehe, sorry." Naruto lowered his voice. "My name's Naruto Uzumaki and you're the one who collapsed here, so I should be asking you that!"

The cat girl smirked at him as she sat up, and Naruto was able to see her eyes clearly. They were a golden tint with flecks of yellow in the center. "S-so, yeah..what's your name?" Naruto sputtered. Without meaning to he'd gotten caught up in the strange color of her eyes, nearly forgetting what he was talking about.

"What's it to you?" the girl replied, this time her voice coming out hard and threatening.

Her change of tone surprised Naruto, and he bristled, clenching his fists. "You could be a little nicer! I DID find you outside of Konoha! I could've turned you in as a spy, you know!"

"Konoha? What the...whatever. It doesn't matter anyways." The cat girl glanced away. "...The name's Nozomi."

"Nozomi...?" Naruto pressed impatiently.

The brunette heaved a sigh. "Just Nozomi." she said boredly.

"Ehh?" Naruto blinked at this, eyebrows raised in surprise. "You don't have a last name?!" he gawked. "How is that even possible? Do you guys not have last names in your village? Hey...where are you from, anyways?"

Nozomi scowled at the babbling blond in response to his question. "Look, kid! My last name and where I come from are none of your business! Don't be stupid enough to ask me when you barely even KNOW me! Ya got that?!"

A drop of sweat rolled down Naruto's face as he recoiled slightly. He hadn't expected such an outburst from the cat girl. "Err..yeah, it." he mumbled in reply, frowning. How was he supposed to get to know her if everything made her lash out like that?

"Good." Nozomi muttered, rolling her eyes.

A long silence followed as neither Naruto nor Nozomi said a word.

"...Soo...what brings you to the Leaf Village, anyways?" Naruto asked, breaking the silence.

Nozomi blinked, her brow furrowing in confusion. "Leaf Village? What?" she said.

"The Leaf Village!" Naruto repeated. "You know, the Village Hidden in the Leaves...Konoha. Any of that ring a bell?"

Nozomi just shook her head back and forth. "Sorry. Never heard of it." she mumbled. Then she got to her feet, grimacing.

"Hey Nozo, are you all right?" Naruto asked, beginning to look concerned.

Nozomi was about to answer, but at that moment, the boy's words sunk in, and she glared slightly. "What did you just call me?" she demanded, taking a menacing step toward him, her ears lowered.

"I called you Nozo." Naruto said cheerfully. However, his grin faded as he saw the look on her face, and he gulped. "..Is there something wrong with that?"

"Don't give me any nicknames!" Nozomi hissed coldly. "It's not as if we're friends!" She turned her back to him and crossed her arms in what Naruto guessed was annoyance. Her sudden movement caused a jingle to sound and Naruto tilted his head curiously.

"Eh?" He stepped in front of Nozomi and gave her a good examination, (which made her want to slap him) trying to locate the source. Soon her found it: a gold bell on a black strap, tied around her neck. Naruto winced and clutched his neck. The bell sure looked uncomfortable, being tied on so tight.

"Heh, nice bell." he said simply.

The only answer he got was a snort. " could at least say thank you, y'know." the young ninja grumbled.

"I'd rather not." the cat girl huffed.

"Why not?!" Naruto demanded, getting annoyed.

"Because...I HATE this bell with a passion." Nozomi muttered.

"What? Then why do you even wear it if you hate it so much?" Naruto questioned her. "Can't get it off? Cause if that's it, I could help you!"

"Look, just mind your own business, ok?!" Nozomi snarled.

Naruto just eyed her for a minute or two, a perplexed look on his face. "You know, you're kinda weird." he said bluntly.

"Your point?" Remarked Nozomi with another snort.

"What are you, anyways?" Naruto questioned, curiosity finally getting the better of him. "Are you somebody's pet cat? Wearing a bell that looks that much like a collar, I think you are! Here, kitty, kitty, kitty!" he teased, flicking the bell that was around her neck, causing it to jingle again and again.

Nozomi just rolled her eyes. She was used to being called "kitty" and the likes. This wasn't the first time someone had done something like this to her. But usually when someone called her those names, she beat the crap out of them.

This time around, though, she was just too tired. Too weak. She'd traveled too much and eaten too little. Needless to say, Nozomi wasn't in the best health at the moment. To pick a fight with someone would practically be asking for death. This, Nozomi wouldn't particularly mind, however, she'd rather drop dead than lose in a fight with this kid. He infuriated her so!

The cat girl heaved a sigh and turned her back to Naruto (who was still going on with his teasing), plopping down onto the ground and letting her head hang, eyes shut in annoyance as she waited for the cat jokes to stop. Her eyes shot open a moment later, however, as she felt a sudden tingle go through her. "What the..?" She glanced sideways and snarled in annoyance as she saw the cause of the tingling sensation.

Sitting cross legged next to her was Naruto, and he was stroking her ears! "Does the kitty kitty Nozomi like having her ears stroked? Good kitty!" he teased, breaking into laughter as he saw the look Nozomi was giving him. "Hey, don't look so mad...How about a chin scratch?"

A drop of sweat ran down Nozomi's head, and she growled under her breath. "You do that...and you'll regret it." she threatened, trying to hold back the urge to purr. This was one thing she really hated about her cat demon. SHE disliked being petted...but the feline in her ENJOYED it immensely! Of course, she didn't go around telling people like Naruto that. What Nozomi REALLY hated was that as hard as she was trying, she knew she wouldn't be able to contain herself for long.

Naruto blinked in surprise. He stopped stroking Nozomi's ears and just stared at her, blue eyes wide.

Nozomi, in turn, blushed faintly and shot him a death glare that clearly said "You say ONE thing and I'll KILL you!"

For a minute, nobody said anything. It was completely silent as Naruto just stared open mouthed at the annoyed and blushing Nozomi. Then, a few seconds later, the boy threw his head back and laughed loudly.

"Ahahaha! Man, Nozo, you really are a cat! I mean, c'mon, purring? Ahahahahaha!"

Nozomi growled, her eyes twitching in annoyance as her blush darkened. If there was one thing she couldn't stand, it was being laughed at! It was just so embarrassing!

Finally, her anger reached its limit, and before either of them realized what was happening, Nozomi lunged at him, clamping her jaws down on his hand, hard.

In response, Naruto screamed like a maniac, his eyes going wide with pain. "AHHH! What are you, CRAZY?! Let go!"

And Nozomi did. A few minutes later, she freed his hand from her jaws and turned away, a smirk on her face. "It's unfortunate what happened, yes, but you had that coming, kid."

Naruto scowled at her as he held onto his bitten hand. "What, can't you take a joke?! I was only messing with you! Apologize!"

"Hmmm...let me think..." Nozomi placed a hand on her chin, appearing to be deep in thought. "...No can do, kid."

"Yes! Hey, stop calling me kid already!" Naruto yelled, getting angrier. "My name's Naruto, and besides that, I'm the same age as you!"

"Whatever." Nozomi rolled her eyes as she once again got to her feet. "Well, it's been real, kid, but I gotta go now." she said over her shoulder.

"Hey, wait! Where are you going?! ...It's Naruto! Na-ru-to!" The blond ninja protested.

"I'm out of here." Nozomi said, ignoring him. "Later." She gave a slight wave as she began to walk away.

"Hey, wait!" Naruto yelled. "I'm not finished with you yet! Stay here!"

"Well, I'm finished with you." Nozomi said, trying to remain calm even though she was getting extremely ticked off. Who the heck was this kid that he thought he could treat her the way he had, then demand she stay like some stupid dog?!

"I won't let you leave. Not yet!" Naruto insisted, placing a hand on her shoulder.

Nozomi sighed and rubbed her temples. This kid was giving her such a headache! "Fine then, I guess there's no other choice!"

Before Naruto could figure out what she meant, Nozomi turned and, with amazing speed, slashed his hand with her claws.

"Yeow!" he cried, falling backward, holding his injured hand tightly to his chest.

The brunette just smirked at him. "See ya, kid."

"I already told you! You're not going anywhere!" Naruto growled, and grabbed the nearest part of her to him, which was her tail, and gave a rough jerk, stunning Nozomi. A wave of pain washed over her as she suddenly felt even weaker than she had before. The cat girl's eyes snapped shut, and she collapsed face first onto the ground.

Seeing this, Naruto's eyes bulged. He released her tail and hurried to her side. "Nozo? Hey Nozo, you all right?" he asked, shaking her.

When she didn't answer (or budge, for that matter), he panicked. "Oh man! I killed her! GAH! What do I do now?!" An idea hit him then, and he scooped Nozomi into his arms, then hurried into the village.

A Fateful Meeting? -Oneshot
:new: Hey! So yeah.  Have a nice, freshly revised oneshot!~ =3

....Ok, you can just label me a Narutard now if you want...I really don't care. If I get called that for drawing/writing about something I love...then whatever...I don't really give a flip =D

XD How to explain this one...? I'm not that great at writing Naruto fan fiction...which is why I never did...until today. Cause I was just fooling around playing my PS2 games when suddenly this scene played out in my's the part where Naruto first meets Nozomi, and what happens thereafter x3

Now, I had originally had a different kinda story as to what happened when he first found her...but this idea was too funny for me to pass up! And so...I grabbed a pencil and paper...2 1/2 hours later I was done x3

I think Naruto's pretty decent in this...maybe not 100% IC, but I still tried my very best to capture him as the funny, mischievous little knuckle head we all know and love! So please go easy on me if not everything i entirely perfect...remember, this was my first try at any kind of Naruto fan fiction! XD;

Anyways...please comment if you read and tell me if it's good or not...but gentle, I'm very fragile x3;
